6 body parts we have but actually don´t need

Be the first to comment!
Labels:
Human body has about two dozen parts that is doesn´t need. All of them are left from the early times of the evolution and had a vital role in a survival. Now, we managed to evolve and have no use of them anymore. Eventually, they will disappear completely and are already in the process of vanishing. Charles Darwin called them vestigial organs and used them as one of the evidences for the evolution theory.

Let´s see what are some of the most popular and useless parts of us.

#1 An appendix – once useful, now dangerous

An appendix once had a big role in the digestion process. It was probable designed to help digest raw plants because the stomach wasn´t good in that. Now it is believed that it hasn´t got any real or vital purpose. Some claim that it has a new function and that is to help us fight diseases. We don’t really need it and many people had their surgically removed after becoming infected.

#2 Do tonsils have any purpose except causing the pain?

Tonsils are the most removed human organ. They are used to fight the diseases that attack the throat. Once they manage to defeat the infection they get red and start to swell. It happens often and because of that, it was normal for people to remove them in their childhood. Today, we have antibiotics that help repress the symptoms and usually don´t remove them as a precaution.

#3 A very small tail

The tail bone is a proof that we used to have a tail. As we started to walk on two feet, the use for it disappeared and all that was left is a little bone. Although it helps us a bit while sitting and standing, the main use of it, and the most of what it was, is now gone.

#4 Wisdom tooth

People usually have four of the wisdom teeth, but some have none. The evolution started to remove wisdom teeth from our genetic code because we no longer have any use for them. There are many people that have them removed because they can create severe problems. They were useful once when our jaw was bigger and we had to eat a lot of plants to survive. Today, they are mostly just in the way.

#5 The use of goose bumps

When you get cold or scared you usually get the goose bumps too. There is no purpose for them because we don´t have our fur anymore. They were used to create a ticker layer of hair to keep the heat from escaping our body. It is not sure why we don´t have fur anymore, but still have our goose bumps. It is safe to say that after some more time we will lose that useless ability too.

#6 Moving my ears

There are some people that are capable of moving their ears up, using only their ear muscles. Some believe it is a skill that can be learned, and they are right. We all have the muscles needed to perform that funny and useless trick, but we can´t do it without some practice. The muscles were once used to move the ears in different directions without the need to move the head. It is something that comes very useful in a hunt. Since we don´t hunt our pray to survive anymore, we are more and more losing the ability to move them at all.

4 Facts people think are true but are actually not

Be the first to comment!

There are many scientific and historical “facts” that people believe are true. I will not try to figure out why during the time when information is so easily available. The list of so called facts goes on and on, but I will concentrate only on the ones most people think are true.

#1 Mars is red; Earth is blue; Sun is yellow

First on the list are planets and the most famous stars of all. The color of the Sun is the long lasting lie people believed. Almost every person would say that the Sun is yellow in color. There is nothing wrong in thinking so because that is how we are seeing it every day. Only when humanity managed to send telescopes to space, we found out the truth.  Sun is not yellow. The real color is actually white. The reason for believing otherwise is our own atmosphere. Depending on the time of day that is conditioned by the Earths orientation towards the Sun, we can see stars in different colors. It is mostly yellow, so we usually think of it in that way. When observing from space, it is clear that the real color is white. When the light passes through the atmosphere it only seems to be in some different color.

We started getting pictures of Mars pretty recently. On all of them we can see how red it is, can´t we? But, the planet itself is actually orange and the iron rich atmosphere is red. When we look at Mars we actually see its atmosphere´s color and not the planet´s. The same goes for Earth. It is obvious to anyone that the earth we are walking on is not blue, but the sky is. The sky we look at is actually our atmosphere which is colored in blue because of the color of ozone.

#2 Bulls hate color red

Some believe that bulls can see only one color and that it is red. It is quite obvious to everyone who ever watched the matador waving a red sheet and bull starts rushing towards it.  That is not true! Bulls can actually see all the colors and not just red. Bulls are usually attacked due to the movements made by the matador and not the color. There were also experiments made when bull actually ignored red and attacked to some other color. Of course, when a different bull was tested he actually did prefer red. Normally the bull´s reaction is always to attack the one that is moving no matter what color it is.

#3 Napoleon was short

There are two reasons why people think that Napoleon was short. The first is because his height was officially listed as 5.2 feet. Ok, now you think that is short, but you are missing crucial information because French units are not the same as modern international units. When converted to modern international units his height is measured at 5.7 feet which is common. With that height he was actually above average in his time. Why did people call him “Le Petit Caporel” (The Little Corporal) then? It was because he was always surrounded with very high bodyguards and seamed short in comparison. Also, the nickname wasn´t intended as an insult rather as the sign of affection.

#4 Christopher Columbus discovered America

To say it plain and simple: He didn´t. He wasn´t in a search for a new land and he didn´t even know he reached America at first. Columbus planned to go to Asia, and wasn´t surprised how short the trip lasted because he thought it was located where America is. If, by chance it was not America, he and his crew would have died from starvation because he miscalculated the supplies needed for the trip. In fact, America was already known as a popular fishing site for rich Europeans at the time Columbus lived.

Interesting facts about the Internet you probable don´t know

It is almost impossible to find out any solid statistics about the Internet. The reason is that our global net is becoming incomprehensibly bigger every second. The statistics that were made a year ago, or just a month ago, are no longer valid. So, I will stick to the facts that are not likely to be changed ever.

But before that, let´s see what the Internet really is. People often think the Internet and World Wide Web (WWW) are the same thing. They are not. World Wide Web is a system of interlinked hypertext documents that people are accessing using the Internet. The Internet is a system of interconnected computer networks. So, in plain terms, the Internet is the hardware and World Wide Web is the software.

Let´s see how they started.

The internet began in 1960´s at MIT. It is much sooner than anyone would say, because it took some time for the creators to make it usable worldwide. The first word ever transmitted over the Internet was LOG. It is not a kind of a code but a failed attempt to write LOGIN. The newly created network wasn´t able to withstand the greater amount of data after writing the letter ‘G’. The result was the crash of the network and leaving only half of the intended word online.

After some fine-tuning, creators managed to put together the first web page. It´s URL was and still is http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html . The page was dedicated to the first “WorldWideWeb” project containing a lot of information about it. At that time, it was the only page on the Internet. The original page is lost, but the recreated content is still available at the same link.

You know how today, most people (statistics say 50%, but as I already mentioned, they can´t be trusted) use the Internet for sharing files using torrent or some similar streaming media? Well, the authorities had a similar problem in the late 1980´s when one web site was actually forced to shut down.

Search engines made our lives on the Internet much easier. Although Google wasn´t the first it is certainly the best when it comes to finding the data on the Internet. But Google had some initial problems too. Did you ever wonder why Google looks the way it does; Why it only has a field to enter the keywords and a search button? It is left from the times when founders of Google didn´t know much about HTML or design, but only concentrated on finding the information.

Today, according to Google, there are more than five million terabytes of information on the Internet. For those of you who don´t know, one terabyte is 1024 gigabytes, and one million has six zeros. Do the math on your own.

All that data contains many pictures and about 80 per cent of them are of naked women. Pornography also takes one third of all Internet searches.

Ok, I know I said that the statistics can´t be trusted, but I found it quite interesting. You can decide whether you think they are still valid.

There are 18 countries that still don´t have access to the Internet.

70% of Americans use the Internet and on the other hand only 3% of Africans us it.

There is only 17 per cent of world population on the Internet. One third of them come from Asia.

All URL-s from www.aaa.com to www.zzz.com are already taken.

North Korea´s internet statistics are confidential.

As any technology, the Internet has come a long way since that one web page. Today, we use it to watch videos, play games, post pictures and much more. It is only a matter of time when the things we can do now on the Internet will be considered obsolete and there will be some other article laughing about it.

8 of the most bizarre end of the world theories

Be the first to comment!
Labels: ,
Before reading the most bizarre end of the world theories I would like you to stop and try to think about the ones you heard of. I did the same thing before starting to write this text and managed to think of only two. Of course I am not talking about any official religious theory, just the ones people made up on their own and for some reason managed to become really popular.

After doing my research I was surprised to find more than 150 theories that become public and many people actually believed would happen. I am going to list them chronologically.

1 The end of Rome

The year many Romans believed would bring the end of the world was 634 BC. The Romans calculated the year by adding 10 years to the mythological eagles that had revealed to Romulus. It is not sure why the number 10 was added and not some other number. And yes it wasn´t about the ending of an entire world – just Rome. Still, it is the first recorded end of (something) theory.

2 The end of Rome (again)

When the first theory failed it made some room for the new theory. The new one was also created from the myth about Romulus but this time the calculations were different. The end of world (Rome) should have happened in 389 BC. It didn´t.

3 Secret dimensions of Noah´s ark

Although some Christians already had different ideas when the world will and; by the year 500 there was only one worthy enough to earn a place at this list. The prediction was based on the dimensions of Noah´s ark and after making the calculations it gave the year 500 as the last year ever. Of course the world didn´t end then.

4 Secret dimensions of Noah´s ark (revised)

Just like with Rome, the calculations from the dimensions of Noah´s ark were revised. According to the new calculations the world should have ended at the year 800.

5 Because it sounds good

One of the most popular dates for the end of the world was January 1, 1000. It is a nice round number so why wouldn´t the world end then? Well, it didn´t but many believed it would. The theory was taken so seriously that riots occurred through Europe and thousands of people headed for Jerusalem.

6 The “Comet pills”

There was a popular theory that Halley´s comet would destroy the atmosphere but not the planet itself and that the ones who took the “Comet pills” will be saved. The comet passed in 1910 and nothing happened – except someone earning a lot of money.

7 It still sounds good

One of the most popular theories was the one about the Y2K millennium bug. The bug was supposed to destroy all the computers in the world and cause a worldwide crisis that would lead to the world war. As the year 2000 approached so were more and more theories created. By January 1, 2000 there were a dozen of different theories that didn´t come true.

8 The last year

2012 was the best candidate for the end of the world. Mayans said the world would end at December 21, which many believed. People were so convinced that the end will come that many of them started building shelters and nuclear bunkers. There were thousands of theories what will happen but only few were actually connected with what the Mayans said.

After all that time and theories we are all still here. If you were wondering, the next end of the world is set to be at 2020. But don´t worry, since the author was already wrong 50 years ago.

8 interesting facts about human body you are not aware of

Be the first to comment!
Labels: , ,
Most of the people are used to living their life without thinking much about their body. People often spend much time thinking about their problems, plans for the future, their jobs, but rarely about one thing they can´t escape from. There are some facts most of you don´t know or never think about; today, I am bringing them to you.

1.You can´t swallow and breath in the same time

The reason for not being able to swallow and breathe in the same time is lying in the fact that we can talk. Almost all the mammals can perform that process, but none of them can talk. That flaw in human neck structure made many people choke while eating. They were unable to swallow a big piece of food and breathe in the same time, and were too nervous at that moment to do one thing at a time.

2.You can´t lick your elbow

Not being able to lick your own elbow is probable the most popular thing people know they can´t do. Almost every child tried to do it at least once in their childhood. There are two explanations why. First one is that your hand is too long and the second that your tongue is too short. You don´t really need to be a scientist to figure that out.

3.We are as hairy as the chimpanzees

Humans have the same number of hairs as the chimpanzees do. Ours are much lighter and thinner and some of them are almost invisible. Scientists are not sure why we have lost most of our fur but all agree that it has something to do with us becoming much more docile after the years of evolution.

4.There are more shades than you think

Most humans have 3 types of receptors used to see colors. Those 3 enable us to see many different shades but not all of them. There are people that have 4 or even 5 types of color receptors and are able to see much more shades than the rest of us. I can´t even imagine how that looks like.

5.We are all actually floating

Our body is made of millions of atoms that can never touch each other. It means that you actually never touch anything. When you are walking you are actually floating above the ground; when you are siting, you are in fact floating above your chair… The distance between you and ground, or a chair is so small that you think that the two are touching.

6.How old are you?

I don´t want to take this to a philosophical or religious level, but your real age is probable not the one you think it is. Every human is made of their mother´s and father´s genetic materials. But, did you know that your mother´s genetic material, which is located in the egg, is actually as old as your mother? The eggs are formed in females in their embryo stage and are the same ones used to create children. It means that half of your genetic material is actually as old as your mother. Do you still know how old you are?

7.You could live in space

Yes, you could live in space, but only for a short time. Forget about all that sci-fi movies you watched where people were exposed to open space and exploded or died instantly. Don´t worry, you wouldn´t explode or freeze to death. You would be able to survive as long as you could hold your breath. There was an astronaut in 1965 whose space suit got damaged during a spacewalk. He remained conscious for about 14 second but managed to survive.

8 of the very weird Guinness world records

Be the first to comment!
Labels: ,
Guinness world records were originally created to hold the data about various “normal” records. They mostly concentrated on the highest, fastest, fattest humans alive but become something much different. Today, people do all kinds of stupid things to get their names in the Guinness book. Let´s see some of the weirdest records recorded.

1.The spoon man

If you were wondering how many magnetized spoons can human body hold look no further. There is a man called Etibar Elchiyev who decided to find the answer for you. He managed to hold 50 magnetized metal spoons on his body and entered the Guinness book.

2.The pierced man

I believe that Etibar has to go to Germany and meet a man called Rolf Bucholz. The two would make such good friends because they booth like metal. The reason why, is that Rolf has 453 piercings in his body and hold a record for the most pierced man in the world

3.Feeling really hungry

Did you ever woke up and decided to make couple of thousands of eggs for breakfast? In 2010 Turkish egg producers association decided to celebrate world egg day by cooking the world’s largest omelet. They decided to use 110.000 eggs and 432 liters of oil to make a 6 tons omelet. It was almost twice as big as the previous one.

4.Unicycle and a bottle

Knowing how to ride a unicycle is not something everyone can do. But, even fewer people can drive it over a 8.93 meter-long row of beer bottles. Lutz Eichholz decided to beat the previous record in obviously so popular discipline and managed to do so. His 127 beer bottles were in an almost one meter longer row than the predecessors.

5.Airport security nightmare

Since airplane tickets are so expensive, people were forced to find other ways for entering the airport without anyone noticing them. I don´t know if that was Leslie Tipton´s reason for managing to enter a zipped suitcase in 5.43 seconds. She managed to enter the Guinness world records book by doing so. I just hope she didn´t inspire some cheap man to do the same on the airports.

6.Well, I use it to clean my teeth

Were you ever so bored that you put your toothbrush in your mouth and a basketball on it and try to spin it? Michael Kopp has managed to do it for 26 seconds. Let´s just hope that he brushes his teeth longer than that.

7.Every bride´s dream

Every woman wants to have a perfect wedding dress. I don’t know if bigger (or longer in this case) is always better but a girl called Emma did. Emma was a model that had an honor to wear the world´s longest wedding dress ever. It took 100 days, 1.857 needles and 4.700 meters of material to make 2.750 meters long wedding dress. That would be some wedding procession.

8.The face you will remember

There are some men that have a really hairy faces. But the hairiest face record holder is actually a young girl called Supatra Sasuphan from Thailand. It is hard to say how hairy she is in any numbers but I guess that the Guinness judges managed to count all the hair on her face. She says that it doesn´t bother her and that it makes her feel very special. She is happy and proud to hold the hairiest face title.

5 Strange Animals and Why Is Them Not The Same As the Remainder

Be the first to comment!
Labels:
I am having a break from all that medicine-related mumbo-jumbo to fairly share some strange stuff (again). I'm sure you all know very well what animals are. Often, members of a certain 'class' of animals have things in accordance like egg-laying for birds o-r live birth for mammals. There are however some features of some of the people that produce them stand out. Here are some unusual animals and what makes them so.

Sloths

Sloths have a tiny ears, large eyes, a brief snout, and flat head. They likewise have long legs and a stubby tail. But what makes them different from other mammals? Many mammals have seven cervical vertebrae. Two-toes sloths only have six and three-toes sloths have nine. What also makes them bizarre is their physical abilities and behavior generally. Sloths can only just move one and every 5 minutes to a-half meter. How slow is that? Also, they spend nearly all of their lives hanging on the division sleeping for 15-18 hours (even though later reports say that they only rest for around 10 or so hours). They're going down only one time a week to urinate and other 'calls of nature.' Their small also cling to-the mother's fur but frequently fall down. The good thing is, they're fairly tough and don't die from falls. Nevertheless, in case a predator is waiting under, then there is an excellent chance that the young are certain to get eaten.

Platypus

The platypus is one strange person. It's the only mammal that's webbed feet and a rubber snout making it seem nearer to a goose than anything than anything else. The webbed feet is folded back when walking on land and is more notable on its front feet. Its jaw can be distinctive from many animals together with its jaw muscles. It's activity can be different as its human body is similar to a dinosaur that has the legs on the sides in place of underneath.

Bats

Bats are the sole trip capable mammals using the forelimbs developed directly into wings rather than legs or arms. They're much like animals so they're known as 'traveling rats.' They've poorly developed sight and track feed employing a process called echolocation. Fundamentally, they emit high-pitched sounds and pay attention to the echoes similar to the technology used in submarines. They use sonar to locate their prey in the place of by locating them visually.

Armadillos

Armadillo is Spanish for 'little armored one.' True to its title, the armadillo is really a mammal using a bony armor layer which it uses for defense against predators. They're great diggers and use their sharp claws to get for food and build dens. Like bats, they've poor vision. Their shield is formed by plates of dermal bone covered in relatively small, overlapping epidermal machines called scutes, which is composed of bone with a covering of horn. They have rigid glasses over the hips and shoulders, with a number of bands separated by skin covering the back and flanks. The armor includes the upper elements of the limbs, the top of the head, and the end.

Whales

When I was younger, I thought whales and dolphins were fishes. They don't have gills and breathe through their lungs which can make them different from fishes. Though they appear to be fishes with flippers and tail fins, they've mammary glands (which makes them mammals) which they use to feed their young with milk. It's believed that whales, along side whales and porpoises, are descendants of land-walkers. Although it might be difficult to believe, this unusual mammal have been found to have hind-leg bones which serve no purpose and serve as an object of attention among researchers, making many believe they have developed from land-living animals or would develop into one. It would be scary to assume whales walking on land though.
